Same Gamma turbo as the i30 SR

The SR Turbo runs the 1.6L G4FJ Gamma II T-GDI - the exact engine shared with the i30 SR and Veloster Turbo - making a genuine 150kW and 265Nm from the factory. That shared platform is the good news: anything developed for the i30 SR Gamma motor generally carries straight across, so this Elantra has far more tuning support than the badge suggests.

What's the best first mod for an SR Turbo?

An ECU tune. The Gamma 1.6T responds well to a recalibration and it's the single biggest gain per dollar before you touch any hardware. Get that sorted before spending on bolt-ons.

What sort of gains are realistic?

On the stock turbo and 98 RON, a good tune typically lands around 180-190kW at the crank with a solid torque bump down low. It's a real, drivable improvement rather than a dyno-queen number - the factory turbo is the ceiling beyond that.

Does it actually need a tune, or are bolt-ons enough?

Bolt-ons like an intake or downpipe do very little on their own without a tune to take advantage of them. The car is fundamentally software-limited from the factory, so the tune is what unlocks the rest.

Any known weak points to watch?

The 7DCT can get jerky low-speed manners and needs its fluid looked after, so don't neglect servicing if you're adding torque. The Gamma 1.6T itself is a sound engine - just keep the oil fresh and feed it 98 once tuned.
