Hyundai's first dual-clutch, twin-scroll and all

The FS Veloster Turbo runs the 1.6L Gamma T-GDi (G4FJ) with a twin-scroll turbo, and it was the first Hyundai sold here with a dual-clutch auto. Australian SR Turbo cars made 150 kW and 265 Nm from the factory. Aftermarket support is thinner than a Golf GTI or i30 N, but the Gamma platform shares a lot with the Kia/Hyundai 1.6T family, so the basics are well understood.

FAQ

Common questions

What's the best first mod?

A proper ECU tune. The factory map is conservative on boost and timing, and a flash on the stock turbo is the single biggest gain you'll get for the money. Sort the tune before you spend on hardware.

What realistic gains can I expect from a tune?

On a stock turbo with a decent intake and an aftermarket downpipe, you're typically looking at roughly 175-190 kW at the crank on 98. The twin-scroll turbo is small, so it runs out of breath up top rather than making big top-end numbers.

Does it actually need a tune, or just bolt-ons?

Bolt-ons like an intake or exhaust do very little on their own here because the ECU controls boost tightly. You need the tune to take advantage of any hardware, so budget for it as the core of the build, not an afterthought.

Any known weak points I should watch?

The dual-clutch (DCT) auto is the main concern under added torque, so keep it sensibly tuned and service the trans fluid. Carbon build-up on the intake valves is normal for this direct-injection engine, and the small twin-scroll turbo limits how far you can push it. Aftermarket turbo and big-power parts are scarce, so it's better treated as a tidy daily with a tune than a project car.
