A homologation special built on its own line

The GR Yaris isn't a tarted-up shopping car. Toyota built it as a rally homologation special with a bespoke three-door body, GR-Four AWD with front and rear Torsen diffs, and the most powerful production three-cylinder engine going at launch. The G16E-GTS responds extremely well to tuning, so the aftermarket support is genuinely deep for such a niche car.

FAQ

Common questions

What's the best first mod for a GR Yaris?

A flash tune. The stock ECU leaves a lot on the table, and a Stage 1 calibration on the standard hardware typically lifts a launch-spec car to the mid-240s kW at the crank. It's the cheapest power-per-dollar you'll find on this platform.

What realistic gains can I expect from bolt-ons and a tune?

Stage 1 (tune only) gets you to roughly 240-250 kW. Add an intake, front-mount intercooler and a high-flow exhaust with a Stage 2 tune and 260-270 kW is on the table on 98. The G16E is a strong little engine and takes the extra boost happily within sensible limits.

Does it actually need a tune, or are bolt-ons enough on their own?

It needs a tune. Bolting on hardware without recalibrating the ECU gives you almost nothing and can run the car lean. The engine makes its gains from boost and timing changes, so the tune is doing the real work, not the parts.

Are there any known weak points to watch?

The early launch cars are known for oil consumption, so keep an eye on the dipstick, especially before and after a track day. The factory clutch is also the limit once you push past Stage 2 power, and the front bumper crash structure restricts intercooler airflow, which is why a front-mount upgrade is a popular early move.
