FAQ
Common questions
What's the best first mod for the GT?
An ECU tune. The 1.6 T-GDI leaves a fair bit on the table from the factory, and a remap on stock hardware is the cheapest, most noticeable gain you'll get. Sort the tune before you spend on bolt-ons.
What gains are realistic on the stock turbo?
On the factory twin-scroll turbo and a Stage 1 tune you're looking at roughly 175-185 kW and a solid lift in mid-range torque, mostly felt in everyday driving. It won't turn the car into a GTI, but it's a genuine, drivable improvement.
Are there known weak points I should watch?
Yes. The wastegate actuator spring tires with age and lets boost taper off up top, so check for that before tuning. The OEM ignition coils and carbon buildup on the intake valves are also common on these direct-injection engines past 60-80,000 km.
Is parts support good for this car in Australia?
Honestly, no, the JD GT was a low-volume, Euro-built oddity here, so off-the-shelf hardware is scarce. The upside is the engine is shared with far more common Hyundai/Kia models, so tuning and many service parts cross over. Talk to us about what's actually available before you commit.
