A three-cylinder that shuts one off

The SA ST-Line runs Ford's 1.5L EcoBoost three-cylinder with industry-first cylinder deactivation, dropping to two pots when you're cruising. It's the sporty-look trim, not the full ST, so it shares the ST's stance and seats but keeps the smaller turbo three and an eight-speed auto. Aftermarket support is thin compared to the ST, but the EcoBoost responds well to the basics.

FAQ

Common questions

What's the best first mod on the ST-Line?

A custom ECU tune. The 1.5 EcoBoost leaves a fair bit on the table from the factory, and a tune cleans up throttle response and the auto's shift logic for the biggest real-world gain per dollar before you touch hardware.

What realistic gains can I expect from a tune?

On a healthy stock car you're looking at roughly 20-30kW and similar torque on 98 RON, with the bulk of it felt in the mid-range. It won't turn an ST-Line into an ST, but it makes the daily noticeably sharper.

Does it need an intake or exhaust to make the tune work?

No. A tune stands on its own on the stock setup. A panel filter and a cat-back help noise and a touch of flow, but they're refinement, not a requirement, and the gains from bolt-ons alone are small without the tune doing the work.

Any known weak points I should watch?

The 1.5 EcoBoost uses a wet timing belt that runs in oil, so stick to strict service intervals with the correct oil, as a neglected belt can shed and cause major damage. Otherwise the engine is solid; keep on top of servicing and it handles a sensible tune fine.
