Hyundai-Kia's Theta II in a budget hatch

The TD Cerato runs the naturally aspirated 2.0L Theta II G4KD with dual CVVT - the same engine family Hyundai-Kia turbocharged for the hotter cars, but here it's a plain port-injected NA unit making 115kW/194Nm. As a non-turbo economy car it has very little dedicated aftermarket support, so be honest with your expectations: there's no big-power story here, just sensible bolt-ons and maintenance.

FAQ

Common questions

What's the best first mod for a TD Cerato?

Honestly, a good set of tyres and fresh brake pads will transform how the car drives more than any power part. After that a cat-back exhaust or panel filter is about the extent of worthwhile NA bolt-ons - do them for sound and feel, not numbers.

Will a tune give me real gains?

Not much. A naturally aspirated 2.0 like this only frees up a handful of kW from a remap, so a tune is rarely worth the money on a stock TD. Tuning only starts to make sense if you've gone forced induction, which almost nobody does on this car.

Is there much aftermarket support for this model?

Very little that's Cerato-specific. You'll mostly be working with universal parts (exhaust, filters, suspension, brakes) and shared Theta engine components rather than a dedicated catalogue, so expect to adapt rather than bolt-on.

Any known weak points to watch?

The Theta II MPI engines like to be kept topped up - watch oil level and stick to the service interval. Otherwise it's a robust, low-stress NA unit; the suspension bushes and front brakes are the usual age-related wear items on a car of this vintage.
