First front-driver to get Ford's electronic LSD

The SA Focus ST was Ford's first FWD car fitted with a BorgWarner electronic limited-slip diff, standard on both the 6-speed manual and 7-speed auto. It clutches torque across the front axle to kill wheelspin on corner exit, which is why the chassis copes so well once you add power. The 2.3 EcoBoost is the same family as the Mk3 RS, so there's real headroom and a deep aftermarket to draw on.

FAQ

Common questions

What's the best first mod?

A Stage 1 ECU tune. The 2.3 EcoBoost responds strongly to software alone and it's the best value gain you'll make before touching hardware.

Realistic gains from a tune?

Stage 1 on stock hardware typically lifts it to around 240-250 kW with a big jump in mid-range torque. Add a front-mount intercooler and downpipe for Stage 2 and you'll hold those numbers more consistently and push a little higher.

Does it actually need a tune to be worth modding?

Yes. Bolt-ons like an intercooler or intake do little on the stock map. The ECU calibration is where the EcoBoost wakes up, so tune first, then build around it.

Any known weak points to watch?

The factory intercooler heat-soaks hard when you're pushing it, so it's the first hardware upgrade for anyone tuning. Keep an eye on clutch wear in manuals once torque climbs, and use quality 98 RON fuel.
