The N hatch's engine in a four-door

The i30 Sedan N (Elantra N everywhere else) runs the same 2.0L Theta-II turbo as the i30 N hatch and Kona N — 206kW/392Nm, with the choice of a 6-speed manual or the 8-speed wet N DCT. Its ECU runs aggressive octane learning, so it pulls timing hard on lower-grade fuel and can feel flat on a tank of 91; stick to good 98 to actually get what you paid for.

Common questions

What is the best first upgrade?

Our Stage 1 (CT500) package - not just a tune on its own. It is a high-flow downpipe, one-step-colder spark plugs, an upgraded blow-off valve and an engine pitch mount, finished with the tune, and each part earns its place. The factory downpipe has two cats in it and is a major restriction; we step the plugs one heat range colder as best practice when adding power, to keep cylinder temps down; the factory BOV is a plastic unit with a rubber seal that has been known to leak once the car is tuned; and the pitch mount is quick to fit while the downpipe is already out, and tames the axle tramp these cars are known for. The tune then makes the most of the lot.

What sort of power gains can I expect?

With our Stage 1 (CT500) package you can generally expect around +55kW and +120Nm at the flywheel. The factory figure looks low because the CN7 N runs an aggressive octane-learning routine from the factory - we disable it, which is a big part of the gain.

How much further can it go?

Stage 2 (CT550) adds the full bolt-ons; a hybrid turbo is the path to bigger power from there.
